1st Grade - Alpha Explosion

For the past 2 weeks, we've examined a great book called Alpha Explosion by John Nickle. We then used our brainstorming, originality, fluency, and flexibility skills to create our own Alpha Explosion pages. Magazines, papers, computer printouts, and lots of cross-talking helped the first graders to create some very cool real-life letter collages. I have included the scans below of their "paper" projects. Great work, PGPers!

See you in 2011!  Have a great holiday!

PGP - 1st Grade - Sculpture

For the past month or so in 1st grade PGP, we've been studying about sculpture art. We explored varied and above-level art vocabulary and took an online tour of some of the country's most famous Art/Sculpture museums, such as the Nasher Sculpture Center and the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.  We then spent a week or so playing with "junk" as an art medium, and another week or so working on our own "junk" sculptures.

See above for the awesome pictures of our 1st graders and their Junk Sculptures.  We had a great time discussing the differences between inventions and sculpture and talking about what is junk and what is art!

Great unit and great students to work with!
